South West LLEN
South West Local Learning & Employment Network Inc (South West LLEN) has been working with local schools and the community to support at risk young people since 2002. The LLEN Network consists of 31 not-for-profit associations covering all of Victoria.
Who we are & what we do
As a not-for-profit incorporated association we represent our members from the education, training, community, government, business and employment sectors to improve the outcomes of young people. We do this by working in partnership to develop new and enhance existing pathways and support for young people in South-West Victoria.
At South West LLEN we adapt our delivery according to current needs, emphasising the importance of careers, career planning, work-ready skills and senior secondary school transitions and industry engagement.
We are a small organisation seeking to continually improve and look for innovative ways to solve problems that reflect the changing nature of the education and employment sectors facing young people today.
The goal of South West LLEN is to improve outcomes for young people, 10–19 years old, by increasing opportunities for their participation, attainment and successful transitions in education, training or employment.
South West LLEN has a particular focus on young people who are at risk of disengaging, or who have already disengaged from education and training and are not in full time employment.
Our work is fundamental to ensuring that our young people are supported to aspire to and achieve the very best possible education, training and employment outcomes.
Why do we do it?
Making the transition from school to work or further education/training can be hard where there are:
High levels of youth unemployment
Intergenerational poverty and family unemployment
Low rates of school retention
Inadequate support for making the transition from primary school to secondary school
Lack of access to local secondary school places
Poor transport connection to schools or training programs in nearby areas
Early disengagement from learning
Low employability skills, particularly in disadvantaged areas
Young people in rural and regional Victoria have more limited employment and training opportunities than those in towns and cities. South West LLEN exists to assist in opening up opportunities for young people.
How we do it
Via networking, sourcing opportunities, strategic planning, exchanging of information and working closely with schools, communities and students.
We bring together education and training providers, business and industry, community agencies, and parent and family organisations with the collective goal of creating greater opportunities and carving viable career pathways for young people in South West Victoria.
